Fleeing the Scene of An Accident in Arlington

by Jamison Koehler on April 10, 2010

My wife came out of our house yesterday morning to find that sometime during the night a car had apparently gone out of control, driven across our front lawn and walk, and then crashed into a brick wall by the driveway. Whoever had driven the car was gone, leaving the car perched across the brick wall like a seesaw.

I have to admit that my first thought on hearing this news was to be concerned about my car. I normally park it in the driveway. When I remembered that I had left the car at the airport, I thought next of the driver’s potential criminal liability.

Evidence of any potential drinking-and-driving offense vanished with the driver.  Remaining charges that come to mind include fleeing the scene of an accident; theft, receiving stolen property, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (if the car had been stolen); carjacking (if the car had been stolen directly from the owner); and/or filing a false police report (if the car was reported stolen by the owner to evade criminal liability).

I never liked that wall anyway, my wife said.
